So, at the ripe old age of 22, I am a firm believer that I’m not getting any younger and the first place it shows is my skin. Everyone knows how important it is to take care of your face (you only have one!).
It has taken several years to find my perfect skincare routine, but boy do I have one. You’ll quickly be able to see my brand loyalties lie (#kiehls), but I swear by it.
I only make very few modifications to my daily routine and I will explain that later on.
Typically I start my nighttime routine by using micellar water or a makeup remover wipe – I swear by Neutrogena Naturals. They are a little more expensive than the regular ones but they have never broken my skin out.
So as for cleansing I use my Clarisonic Mia 2 to help the cleanser really get into my skin and breakdown any excess makeup. Because my skin can be sensitive I use the sensitive brush head.
As for cleanser, it varies on a nightly basis. I typically stick to my Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser ($19.50, kiehls.com) in the morning because it is much more gentle and is really great for starting the day with a clean slate. That being said, sometimes my skin can feel tired and irritated and I definitely use the Kiehl’s at night then, too. It is really gentle on my skin and leaves it super soft.
Right now I have stress acne like you would not believe so I am using Philosophy’s Clear Days Ahead ($22, philosophy.com). This cleanser does have a small percentage of salicylic acid, but not so much that it irritates or dries me out. Seriously just a few days of using this stuff is such a game changer.
Next up is my toner. And, of course, we’re back to Kiehl’s with their Ultra Facial Toner ($16, kiehls.com). This stuff is like a miracle tonic. Unlike most toners that I have used I find that the Ultra Facial one is super moisturizing and doesn’t dry me out or sting from harsh chemicals. I have some acne scaring on my chin and I can really tell a difference when I use this.
The next part of my routine is moisturizer. This is a BIG one for me. A dermatologist once told me that my skin tended to break out more when it was dry and it was like something clicked in my mind and now it is something that I am super aware of. On an everyday basis I use the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream ($47.50, kiehls.com). Though it is marketed as a cream I do find it to be pretty light and definitely use it in the morning.
When it is winter time, though, I tend to use just plain coconut oil (I get mine from Trader Joe’s) at night to give my skin extra moisture. I also believe that my scarring on my chin looks much lighter when I use coconut oil too.
The last thing I use is not an everyday product but it is the BEST spot treatment I have found to date. Unfortunately, I get it from a local plastic surgeon, but it is just a basic retinol cream. But I will say, Dr. J. J. Wendel has some great products. I am including a link here.
The thing I love so much about this treatment is that Dr. Wendel originally made it for his wife, Mary Katherine (who happens to be one of my favorite people!), because she is a redhead with sensitive skin. Like all of us she needed something that would work but also wouldn’t make her turn bright red like a tomato and peel instantly.
The good news is that if you are interested in any of his products you can call Dr. Wendel’s office and you can order it directly from them and they will ship it to you. His number is (615) 921-2100.
I think that skincare is so important and it is so important to find what works best for you. I have found a routine that I definitely see myself sticking with for years to come.
I am choosing to be blissfully unaware that I should probably start adding in some anti-aging products, but whatever. If you have any recommendations, leave them down below!
P.S. Sorry that some of the product’s packaging looks so icky – these babies lived in my toiletry bag in May when I was traveling a lot and experienced some definite wear and tear!
